Do you sing this song:
‘…I surrender all… (2ce)
…unto thee, my blessed Saviour…
…I surrender all…’
Hmm…
This song is mostly used for ‘pulpit calls’ or what some churches call ‘re-dedication’… (i.e. when a believer is believed to have backslidden but now repenting)…
Now you may be wondering, Pastor Dammy, is it wrong to sing the song?
No!
Not at all!
In fact, after you have read this post, I’ll suggest you sing this chorus every day!
So…
… I have a question to those who sing the song!
What exactly are you surrendering!!!
When you sing: ‘…I surrender all…’, what exactly are you surrendering???
Hmm…
Now, I’m sure if I’m to ask an average Christian the question above, I’ll most probably get the following answers:
- you are surrendering your sins!
- you are surrendering your evil habits!
- you are surrendering your addictions!
Hmm…
If the above are your answers, then you have missed the whole point of what Jesus wants you to surrender!
Yes, Jesus doesn’t want you to remain in your sinful habits and addictions but you are surrendering the WRONG things!
Until you know what you are actually to SURRENDER… you will keep finding yourself in the sinful habits and addictions which you have earlier surrendered!
What then are you EXPECTED to surrender?
Read the below verse carefully:
‘… For they BEING IGNORANT of God’s righteousness, and going about to ESTABLISH THEIR OWN RIGHTEOUSNESS, …have not SUBMITTED THEMSELVES unto the righteousness of God…’ (Romans 10:3)
Wow!
What are you to surrender?
YOUR OWN RIGHTEOUSNESS!
That is what Jesus expects you to surrender!
Hmm…
You need to know how serious this is!
When people come for ‘pulpit calls’, what they should be told is that they are to SURRENDER all their self righteousness and the trust in their flesh to perform right in order to win God’s favour!
They should rather see Jesus as their righteousness and REST on this Righteousness to produce the FRUIT of holiness in them!
Now listen carefully: before telling sinners how to LIVE HOLY, you must first tell them extensively how to BELIEVE THEY ARE ALREADY HOLY by the death and resurrection of Jesus for them!
Until you BELIEVE you are Holy….by what Jesus did…you can NEVER LIVE HOLY according to how God desires!
Holiness minus Grace = DEAD WORKS!
But…
Holiness borne out of Grace = GOOD WORKS!
Hmm…
Dead works are works done which could have good praises before men but ZERO reward before God! (Luke 18: 10-14)
Good works are works done which has good praises before men and AMAZING rewards before God! (Romans 14:17-18)
Hmm…
Listen, God does not need your DEAD WORKS!
you were not saved unto DEAD works! (Heb 9:14)
Always be sure you are rendering the RIGHT works!
‘…For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto GOOD WORKS…’ (Eph 2:10)
Hear this: until you SURRENDER your ‘dead works’…you cannot RENDER ‘good works’ to God!
Please stop surrendering the wrong things!
Else, you will be back soon to surrender them again!
Because…
‘…the STRENGTH of SIN is the LAW…’ (1Cor. 15:56)
The law says surrender all your sins before God can accept you!
Grace says receive the GIFT of righteousness from Jesus…and God will accept you! (Romans 10:13)
Hallelujah!
Paul understood how serious this is and he quoted this amazing verse:
‘… and be found in him (Jesus), NOT HAVING MINE OWN RIGHTEOUSNESS, which is of the law, but THAT WHICH IS THROUGH THE FAITH OF CHRIST, the righteousness which is of God by faith…’ (Phil 3:9)
That is how to ‘…surrender all…’!!!
That is the Gospel!
Please Learn to surrender the RIGHT things!
Surrender all your trust in your abilities to surrender those sins…and put your FAITH IN JESUS FINISHED WORK for your sins!
This is where you receive the power to go and sin NO MORE!
Holy living is NOT the basis of salvation!
Hmm…
Holy living is rather the FRUIT of salvation!
So when you sing the song:
‘…I surrender all… (2ce)
…unto thee, my blessed Saviour…
…I surrender all…’
Make sure you are singing it with the correct mindset which is:
‘…I surrender all…(all my righteousness)
…I surrender all…(all my dead works)
…unto thee, my blessed Saviour…
…I surrender all…’
This is very fundamental if you must be a believer full of ‘good works’.
I hope you got the point clear?
Remain under Grace.
Amen.
