PROVERBS 9 REVIEW by Pastor Temilolu

While reading through this chapter has its literal meaning, I have chosen to see Pictures of Christ and his church in the chapter as follows.

THE CHURCH PICTURED

Wisdom has a house, that is, the church: The church is an embodiment of Godly wisdom which is the truth and not worldly wisdom.

Pro. 9:1 Wisdom has built her house and made seven columns for it.

Mat. 16:18…and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it…

Eph. 3:10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,

1Tim. 3:15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

SEVEN COLUMNS REPRESENT THE PILLARS OF THE CHURCH

i.e. the ministers, whether …, apostles; …prophets; …evangelists; …pastors …teachers;

For the

1. perfecting of the saints,

2. work of the ministry,

3. edifying of the body of Christ: Eph. 4:11-12

THE ANIMAL, A PICTURE OF JESUS THE SACRIFICIAL LAMB

Pro. 9:2 She has had an animal killed for a feast, mixed spices in the wine, and set the table. GNB

The animal represents the Lamb of God that was slain and the wine represents his blood that was shed.

Rev. 5:12 Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.

THE RICHES OF HIS GRACE/CHRIST PICTURED

This is the table which he set in the presence of our enemies. Each time we take the communion, we replay the triumph of Jesus Christ at the cross and the enemy is reminded of the woeful lose that he suffered at the hands of our saviour at the cross. It is indeed the table in the presence of our enemy. A table of the finished work.

Psa. 23:5 You prepare a banquet for me, where all my enemies can see me; you welcome me as an honored guest and fill my cup to the brim.

ON THAT TABLE IS THE RICHES OF HIS GRACE IN DISPLAY

Eph. 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

Eph. 2:7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

Eph. 3:8 Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ*;

THE HOLY COMMUNION IS BEAUTIFULLY PICTURED HERE AS WELL AS A LIFE SUSTAINED BY FAITH

The communion table is a brilliant display of God’s wisdom.

Pro. 9:5 Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled.

Gal. 3:11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.

Mark 14:22 -24 And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body. And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it.  And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.

Luke 22:19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.

1Cor. 11:24 – 25 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

THE BELIEVER PICTURED

Pro. 9:3 She hath sent forth her maidens: she crieth upon the highest places of the city,

Isa. 52:7 How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!

Rom. 10:15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

Luke 14:23 And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.

2Cor. 5:20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ,…we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.

JESUS THE GIVER OF ETERNAL LIFE PICTURED

Pro. 9:11 For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.

John 10:28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

John 10:10…I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

THE FATE OF THE SELF-RIGHTEOUS AND UNBELIEVER PICTURED

Those who reject the beautiful invitation to the banquet of the riches of His grace but chose to steal their way through a life of self-righteousness and self-effort are pictured here. Stealing is a picture of self-effort, it seems pleasant and sensible, but the end is not palatable.

Pro. 9:17-18 Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant. But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell.

While you can read literal meaning into the above chapter and glean a lot of wisdom.  Seeing how the preacher explains the Mystery of Christ and His church was refreshing.

Thank you for having me. Be blessed and remain stable.
