Review of Genesis 5

Review of Genesis 5

by Victor Fawole

Welcome to Genesis 5, a book of “genealogies”. Confession Time: There are times that I feel tempted to skip past (or skim through) some parts of the genealogies, as I don’t see the need for these “histories”. I applaud everyone who read through every word, every verse, with keen attention. This review will explore three important things I observed about this chapter. Let’s go…

1. GENERATIONS AFTER GENERATIONS

Genesis 5:1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him;

God is emphatic about the truth that man is not a result of evolution. God created man. There was “a day” God created man. Period! Even if a generation of mankind arises later to question, challenge, doubt, or deny this truth, it doesn’t invalidate it one bit. Dear Gogolights, reject any ideology that erodes this truth off your heart.

God is a Lover of genealogies. He opened the book of Matthew with the genealogy of Jesus. He desires that His people submit to Him, generation after generation, in spite of the individual characters, differences, strengths, and weaknesses. God is not shy or ashamed or too judgmental to walk with and work through any generation that acknowledges Him. Little wonder, He commanded the Israelites to pass on His laws to their children and grandchildren. (Deut. 4:9, Deut. 6:6-7, Deut. 11:19)

Dear Gogolights, let us be intentional about raising generations that will preach and promote the Gospel of the Grace of God, shunning false doctrines and practices. God is helping us in Jesus’ Name!

2. GENDER DISTINCTION

Genesis 5:2 Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.

As believers, our understanding of human sexuality must be rooted and grounded in the scriptures. God created us “male” and “female” — two distinct genders only. Jesus affirmed this (Mark 10:6). Any form of perversion is not scriptural.

We don’t rely on our feelings or desires to decide our gender. Rather, we appreciate the intelligence of God, accept the gender he made us with, and then pattern our lifestyle appropriately. We don’t decide to change our gender, or create a new gender, as that’d question and belittle the wisdom of God.

Also, only these two distinct genders are divinely permitted to come into the union of marriage, to become “one flesh”. Any other form of “marriage” is against the divine order. The devil is funding and promoting all other forms of gender identities and marriage perversions, making them more appealing and acceptable in today’s civilized world. As believers, we must (and also help our children to) stay with scriptures and not be swayed off! God is helping in Jesus’ Name. Amen!

3. GENTLEMAN FRIENDSHIP

Genesis 5:22-24 And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

What a testimony: Enoch walked with God! Hmmmmn… This will be the first record of man “walking with God”, after the Eden experience of “God walking in the garden” (apparently with Adam).

It is important to note that:

A. Enoch’s walk with God was POSSIBLE because he PLEASED God by FAITH

Hebrews 11:5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

B. Enoch’s walk with God was POWERFUL because he PROPHESIED God’s FUTURE plans

Jude 1:14 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints

C. Enoch’s walk with God was PASSIONATE because he PASSED on to God FOREVER

Genesis 5:24 And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

One can easily picture it this way: After walking so passionately with God, one day God told Enoch, “You don’t need to walk home. You’ve done that every day, for 300 years now. Why don’t you just come home with Me forever?”

Dear Gogolights, God is in the business of walking with men and calling men to walk with/before Him.

  • Noah walked with God (Gen. 6:9)
  • God called Abram to walk before Him (Gen. 17:1)
  • Isaac walked before God (Gen. 24:40, Gen. 48:15)
  • David walked before God in His truth (Psa. 56:13, Psa. 26:3)

And as believers, we should devote our lives, every day of our lives, to these:

  • Walking IN God (Divine Indwelling) Col. 2:6
  • Walking BEFORE God (Divine Inspection) Gen. 17:1
  • Walking WITH God (Divine Companionship) Gen. 5:22
  • Walking AFTER God (Divine Leadership) Deut. 13:4

These, we will do, by the grace of God, till we are also raptured (just like Enoch) when our Lord comes for us. Amen!

Grace to you, Church!
